View In The Valley

So, here’s a view into the Rift Valley Academy, and some of the crazy, wonderful kiddos I live with.

The sports this term are boys’ soccer and girls’ basketball. Four of my ladies are on the JV team.

Sike Squad 2

This is the RVA Sike Squad. Female cheerleaders are culturally inappropriate here, so the boys of RVA happily took over the job. And the skirts. Also, we have a bagpiper.

Last week, one of the Student Council events was a ‘Fashion Purge Day’, in which the students were encouraged to purge all the rules of fashion–while remaining in dress code, of course. My girls embraced this day with enthusiasm.

Then there’s just some other odds and ends.

Behold, the glory of the chai tree. This is a metal tree outside of the cafeteria where students hang their mugs to use at chai time–snacks and tea. 10:30. Every day.

This little guy is my favorite little guy. True story: we went down the hill to the market where I bought bread and was given a tomato as change. Welcome to Africa.

My little buddy down the hill was very excited to take my bag and join me on a trip to the market.

And, let’s end with the mystery shoes. Your guess is as good as mine.

I came home one afternoon to find this in the entryway. I still don't know.
